A large-scale evaporator with the correct glassware can replace a reactor system with a double glass cover. The reaction mixture is heated to the boiling point in a rotary flask with the reflux valve on the glassware closed. The connection of the remaining evaporation space to the receiving flask is blocked so that the condensed solvent flows back into the rotary flask. When the reaction is complete, the reflux valve is opened, the solvent evaporated and collected in the receiving flask. This eliminates the need to transfer large quantities of reaction mixture from the traditional reactor to the evaporator. In addition, better mixing is achieved through the rotation, especially with viscous media, and shear-sensitive substances are protected.
